PAPER LINER PROJECT

Zero-Waste Innovation: The Paper Liner Recycling Project

The Hidden Problem:
Paper Liner Waste

What happens to paper liners after use?
For most industries, they’re simply thrown away. But the cost of this waste is staggering:

Over 414 million tonnes of paper are generated globally every year.

About 4 billion trees are cut down for the annual global paper supply.

Producing recycled paper uses 30% less energy than making new paper.

26% of this waste ends up in landfills adding to the ever-growing environmental crisis.

In ASEAN countries, Malaysia alone generates 2.97 kilotonnes of paper waste daily. (MIW)

For every tonne of uncollected paper liner waste, we lose the potential to recycle up to 17 trees, directly impacting deforestation rates.

However, this paper liner waste is considered a recyclable material,
but most of it is in landfills, contributing to environmental issues and wasted potential.

The Journey Begins:

From a Challenge to a
Circular Solution

Every big idea starts with a simple question:
What if we could turn discarded paper liners into something useful?

That question led to the Zero-Waste Paper Liner Project, an initiative that transforms used liners into valuable raw materials, helping both businesses and the environment.

We partnered with like-minded companies, including Wipro Unza and Materials In Works (MIW), to bring this vision to life.

Today, the project collects used paper liners, recycles them into high-quality cellulose pulp, and turns them into new paper products like tissue paper, carton boxes, and labels—closing the loop on paper liner waste.

Why We’re Doing This

A Mission Beyond Waste Management

At Nuplas, our mission goes beyond simply recycling. We’re building a future where circularity is the norm, no the exception

Protecting Natural Resources:
Every recycled liner saves trees, reduces water consumption and minimises energy use.

Reducing Landfill Overflow:
By intercepting paper liner waste before it reaches landfills, we prevent massive CO₂ emissions and combat climate change.

Creating a More Resilient Supply Chain:
Industries that embrace circularity are less dependent on finite resources, reducing supply chain risks and fostering long-term sustainability.

Empowering Businesses to Lead the Change:
Companies participating in our project don’t just meet sustainability goals—they become pioneers in an evolving, eco-conscious marketplace.

Partnerships That Power Change

With the help of like-minded partners such as Wipro Unza and Materials In Works (MIW), we embarked on a mission to collect and repurpose paper liners, making waste reduction a reality.

How It Works:

The Magic of Transformation

Step 1: Collection & Partnerships

It all starts with partnerships. Our network of collaborators ensures that used paper liners are gathered from various industries and brands. Instead of being discarded, these materials are brought to us for a new lease on life.

Nuplas Solutions ensures the entire process flow of paper liner waste is tracked and recorded using the NuCycle App, providing accurate data input and traceability.

This step is where the transformation begins. Once collected, the paper liners undergo a meticulous advanced recycling technique, converting the paper liner waste into recovered cellulose pulp.

Once the converting processes are done, the recovered cellulose pulp will be reprocessed into high-quality raw materials that can be used to create various sustainable products. From new tissue paper and packaging to industrial-grade cardboard, the possibilities are endless.

The Impact: Turning Waste into a Force for Good

From Landfills to a Brighter Future

Through innovative recycling efforts, we’ve diverted massive quantities of paper liners from landfills, preventing nearly 11,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually. Every paper liner we recycle is a step toward cleaner air, healthier ecosystems and a sustainable future. (Source: MIW)

Saving Forests, One Sheet at a Time

Paper liners are more than packaging. They represent the trees, water, and energy used to make them. By recycling them, we reduce the need for new paper and can save up to 54,600 trees each year. (Source: MIW)

One recycled sheet may seem small, but it creates a big impact. That’s the power of this initiative.

Building Resilient, Sustainable Supply Chains

Incorporating recycled paper liners into supply chains isn’t just good for the environment; it’s a smarter way to do business. By reducing reliance on finite natural resources, industries are becoming more resilient and better prepared for the challenges of a resource-constrained future. Sustainability isn’t just a choice anymore—it’s the foundation of long-term success.

FAQ

Paper liner waste is often overlooked because:

  • Lack of Awareness: Many industries are unaware of the environmental impact of discarding paper liners.
  • Logistical Challenges: Collecting and processing used paper liners requires specialised infrastructure and business collaboration.
  • Perceived Low Value: Paper liners are often seen as disposable, with little consideration for their potential to be recycled into valuable resources.
  • Limited Recycling Programmes: Few initiatives exist to collect and recycle paper liners, making it difficult for businesses to participate in sustainable practices.

Your company can participate in the Zero-Waste Paper Liner Project by:

  1. Contacting Nuplas: Reach out to us to express your interest and discuss how your company can contribute.
  2. Collecting Paper Liners: Set up a system to gather used paper liners from your operations.
  3. Partnering with Us: Collaborate with Nuplas and our partners, like Wipro Unza and Materials In Works (MIW), to ensure the liners are collected and recycled efficiently.
  4. Using Recycled Materials: Incorporate the high-quality recovered cellulose pulp into your supply chain for new paper products.
  5. Promoting Sustainability: Share your participation in the project to inspire other businesses to join the movement toward circularity.

A wide range of businesses can participate in the Zero-Waste Paper Liner Project, including:

  • Manufacturing Companies: That use paper liners in their packaging or production processes.
  • Consumer Goods Brands: These rely on paper liners for product packaging.
  • Retailers and Distributors: They handle products packaged with paper liners.
  • Recycling and Waste Management Companies: These can help collect and process paper liner waste.
  • Sustainability-Focused Organisations: They want to reduce their environmental footprint and promote circularity.

The Zero-Waste Paper Liner Project helps reduce carbon emissions by:

  • Diverting Waste from Landfills: Paper liners that would otherwise decompose in landfills release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. By recycling them, we prevent nearly 11,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
  • Reducing Energy Consumption: Producing recycled paper uses 30% less energy than manufacturing new paper, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of paper production.
  • Saving Trees: By recycling paper liners, we reduce the demand for virgin paper, sparing up to 54,600 trees annually. Trees absorb CO₂, so preserving them helps mitigate climate change.
  • Promoting Circularity: By reintegrating recycled materials into supply chains, we reduce the need for resource-intensive production processes, further cutting emissions.

Through these efforts, the project not only reduces waste but also contributes to a healthier planet by combating climate change.
